Manure Management
As any farmer knows, cow manure is a natural byproduct in the production of nutritious milk. Storage and handling of manure at large-scale farms like Pinnacle Dairy is regulated by state mandates and requires state-of-the-art engineering and design. Tuls Dairies far exceed all regulations and include safeguards and redundancies to protect our environment.

Tuls Dairies’ manure management plan includes a series of storage facilities with holding capacities that more than doubles state requirements. The facilities are in full regulatory compliance. They are designed to withstand all anticipated loads and collect all precipitation to prevent any runoff. Storage facilities are connected by crossover pipes to prevent any possibility of overflow. State regulations require that there is zero (no) discharge from the production area to make certain there are no surface water impacts.

Tuls Dairies also helps manage and prevent odors. An 80 millimeter thick, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) cover protects the storage facilities and significantly reduces odor. Tuls Dairies also utilizes odor-reducing technology, including biofilters and microbial technology. As is the case with the storage facility design, all odor control plans far exceed all state regulations.

Tuls Dairies’ adheres to state-approved Nutrient Management Plans at all of its facilities. These Nutrient Management Plans (NMP) ensure environmental protection once the manure leaves the farm and is applied to fields. An NMP is a conservation and crop management tool that protects soil and groundwater and maximizes crop production using science-based manure management. Tuls Dairies complies with and exceeds state regulations concerning manure management. Cutting-edge design and state-mandated plans utilize advanced technology, application protocols and best management practices to prevent runoff and protect surface and groundwater.
